5th Grade instrument selection
Dear 5th Grade Parents,
We are very excited to welcome you and your 5th grader into the Schimelpfenig Band family! There is a lot of information below so please read everything carefully!
The next (and most important) step in joining the band is selecting the instrument your child will play next Fall. We will have an instrument selection day on Saturday, April 7, for all 5th graders to come to Schimelpfenig and choose their instrument. Each student will have an appointment to sit down with a band director to go over their options and try instruments.
In order to avoid conflicts, we have set up a SignUpGenius for you to select an appointment time on April 7th that will work with your family’s schedule. The appointment signup (link below) will be available until Thursday, March 22. Once everyone has an appointment, we will send a confirmation email AND a letter home with detailed information and instructions. Look for this letter to come home the week of March 26.
Please do your best to be available on the 7th. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact myself or Mr. Straka.
Students interested in trying Percussion:
Percussion is an extremely popular class at SMS and there are always more students than the limited class size allows for. Students interested in trying out for the percussion class will go through a separate screening after trying the brass and woodwind instruments. Because of the screening and try out process, April 7th is the only day students will be screened for percussion.
Please go to this link to sign up for an appointment. Be sure to write your student’s name in the comment for your appointment.

Please be advised these are appointment blocks, not specific times. As an example: not every student who signs up for 8:30 will start at 8:30. Some may start at 8:45 or 8:50 AM.We will do our best to be sure all students are able to sit down with a director during their appointment block.
Plan to allow at least 45 minutes for your appointment from the time you arrive at school. If a student wishes to try out for Percussion, you will need to allow extra time for that as well.
Look for an email to be sent out the week of the instrument selection that will include a power point with FAQ’s about the band and the instrument selection process. We look forward to meeting you! Until then, feel free to go to our band website: www.smsband.org. There is a lot of information, including a section for future students that has playing examples of all of the instruments. Please feel free contact myself or Mr. Straka if there is anything we can help you with.
Have a great Spring Break! Thank you!
