Performing Band Supplies

Students in Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble will need the following supplies and equipment:

  • A clean 1 1/2 inch black binder with five divider tabs. We highly recommend a "heavy duty" type binder.
  • A Tuner/Metronome combination with a microphone attachment. (i.e. Korg TM 60) – Will be used daily. Students should have one of these from the 6th grade year.
  • *At this time, students do not need to purchase a flip folder. We will let everyone know if there ends up being a need for one..... A flip folder (all instruments) and a lyre (clarinet, sax, trumpet, euphonium, and trombone – be sure to specify large bore for f-attachment trombones) These will be used for our football game/pep band performances.

In addition, the following items will be needed for each instrument as applicable:
  • A Folding Music Stand for home practice
  • Reeds, reed care supplies, and cork grease for most Woodwinds
  • Valve or Rotor Oils, Slide Grease, and a cleaning snake for Brass

Step Up Instruments

As students advance in their performing abilities, they often outgrow their beginning level instruments and/or mouthpieces. When this happens, the student’s continued musical growth can be negatively affected by an inferior instrument. Upgrading to a semi-professional or professional quality instrument can be a very good investment for continued success. Always contact a director or your child’s Private Instructor prior to purchasing any instrument for your child! Students chosen to participate in the Wind Ensemble are highly encouraged to purchase a step up instrument. Beginning band instruments will not be adequate to keep up with the musical demands.

The following step-up instruments are approved for use in the Schimelpfenig Middle School Band and all of the high school programs in the Plano ISD:

  • Flute - Miyazawa model 102 and up or Yamaha YFL-461H, YFL-574H, or YFL-674H. Flutists are encouraged to visit Carolyn Nussbaum (see below) before purchasing an instrument.
  • Clarinet - Buffet R-13 (Vandoren M13 Lyre mouthpiece and Bonade inverted ligature)
  • Alto Saxophone - Yamaha YAS-875 or Selmer “Super Action 80” (use Vandoren AL3 mouthpiece and Vandoren M/O ligature with any of these)
  • Trumpet - Bach Stradivarius 180-37 or Yamaha YTR8335 Xeno (both with Bach 5C or 3C mouthpiece)
  • Trombone - Bach Stradivarius 42BO, Getzen 1047F or 3047AF, or Conn 88HO (all w/Schilke 51 mouthpiece)

There are often quality used professional level instruments for sale as well. Please ask your student’s private teacher or a band director if you are interested in finding out more information. We can help!
